About Me

Jennifer Noda

I have always been an artist in one form or another.  I began my career as a dancer, choreographer, and then teacher.  My performing career included work with Philadanco 2, Stephen Koplowitz, as well as my own choreography in New York City. I had the pleasure of teaching at Mark Morris Dance Center, L'Academie Americaine in Paris, and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Music and Dance in London.

When injuries prevented me from returning to the dance studio, I began to search for different ways to satisfy my creative brain. A great deal of experimentation took place during this time which led me to my current practice working with wood, paper and porcelain.

INSPIRATION

The main inspiration for my work comes from Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese term meaning ‘Forest Bathing’, or taking in the forest atmosphere for health and wellness benefits.  The experience of being in nature is truly at the heart of my creative process. It helps me find inspiration both in the physical form and also as a tool to process my ideas as they come to mind. Spending time in nature helps me filter and organize my ideas into the abstract. It is my vision that the viewer of my work will find their own personal connections within it.

Techniques

Through my experimentation process I have developed a technique to create my wood panels using wood stain without a brush! The colors are poured onto the wood soaking into some spots more than others.  As the different colors start to blend and move around the panel, I get to witness my art developing like a polaroid picture!  Since each piece of wood has a unique grain, it informs the flow of the stain and guides me to the final result.
